"Amorgos" is imbued with a naturalness that makes it sound as beautiful as it did when it was first published, which is something we can say about very few poems. No matter how many observations we make about "Amorgos," it is difficult, if not impossible, to pinpoint its secret. Perhaps, I hypothesize, the truly astonishing thing about this poem is simply its naturalness, the balance of meaning over language, independent of both. We still cannot touch the core of this naturalness, which is ultimately a divine gift, but we can observe the external features of its "aesthetic," and one of these is certainly the impression that the words are connected by a breath of wind, as if to say that between the flashes and shadows of meaning, as they alternate, there is no vibration, no seams discernible between the phrases. The most musical rhythm, the one we usually hear ending in fanfare, controls the helm of a clear and smooth voice, almost wave-less. This achievement had perhaps not been noted again in Greek literature since the time of Solomos.
