Description

In 2007, R. Dawkins, D. Dennett, S. Harris, and C. Hitchens recorded their landmark discussion on modern atheism. Now, in its first printed edition, their transcribed and edited conversation is enriched with new essays by three of the original participants, as well as a foreword by Stephen Fry. At the dawn of the new atheistic movement, these thinkers, known as the "four horsemen," the harbingers of the deconstruction of religion, enjoyed their cocktails around a round table. What followed was a thorough, groundbreaking, and captivating discussion, which immediately became popular on social media, with millions of views. It was intellectual inquiry at its best: enjoyable, funny, and unpredictable, sincere and exploratory, reminding us of the diverse and multidimensional threads of modern atheism. What was said by the "four horsemen," as they agreed and disagreed with each other, illuminated ideas about the supernatural and religion, science and rationalism, spirituality and religious faith, the components of a truly moral life, and sounded the alarm for our current era. They said about it: • "We are slowly losing the hard-won right [...], the right to be free to judge and criticize religion without persecution and legal prosecution—the crime of blasphemy is lurking. The words of Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, and Dennett are needed more than ever. They are the heirs of Voltaire." — Matt Ridley, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory • "I was riveted. Throughout this discussion, the humility and straightforwardness of science shine against the arrogance, hypocrisy, and audacity of religion. What a refreshing book." — Susan Blackmore, University of Plymouth • "A historical text that belongs in the library of all thinking people. A classic work for our time and for all times." — Michael Shermer, Skeptic • "The kind of these four thinkers is rare: unrepentant, uncompromising, deeply generous with each other and with all who listen. You don't need to be an atheist or a horseman to enjoy every word of this book. You just need to crave genuine intellectual pursuit and open dialogue. And let's face it, in this sense, you are probably undernourished." — Meghan Daum, University of Iowa

One-third of the book consists of the authors' introductions, and the other two-thirds are the discussion that the four of them had at Hitchens' house. It is a small booklet that is easy to read, but also very superficial.
