Orestes implores Apollo for the purification of his house. By the god's command, he goes to Athens, where, always pursued by the Furies, he falls at the statue of Athena. He is judged and acquitted by the goddess's vote. The vengeful Furies transform into spirits of forgiveness, the Eumenides, and settle in their sanctuary on the Areopagus. The inevitability of punishment, the oscillation of man between his will and divine will, blindness from passion, revenge, and atonement are the backdrop of the ideas in the Oresteia, which is completed with this tragedy.
