The prose work of George Seferis "Six Nights on the Acropolis" was first published in 1974, three years after his death, edited by G. P. Savvidis, based on a manuscript and two typescripts found in the poet's archive.
Both typescripts are preceded by the following note from Seferis:
"In January ('54), while trying to organize old papers, I found a folder of manuscripts from the years 1926-1928. They were pieces of a fairly advanced narrative, from a "novel," as I called it then. These gave me the daring idea to assemble and glue them together in such a way that they could be read. Thus, I was captivated by the present work, which I do not intend for publication. While working on it, I tried to remain strictly faithful to those papers and to exclude ideas and feelings that people or things might have created for me after the '30s. The time of action is the years '25-'27; the moons are 1928; I made linguistic corrections for reasons of uniformity.
Needless to emphasize that all characters are creatures of the imagination."
George Seferis, Beirut, August 15, 1954
