Introverted, frail, and a lover of literature – but also of astronomy – from a very young age, Lovecraft spent long periods of his life isolated from the outside world. He began to seriously engage in writing shortly before reaching adulthood, and in 1923 he started publishing his stories in the horror magazine Weird Tales. He once said that "all my stories are based on the fundamental assumption that common human laws and emotions have no validity or significance in the universe."
