Description

The Fall of Arthur is an unfinished poem by J.R.R. Tolkien, which was retrieved from his archives by his son Christopher. It narrates the last campaign of the legendary King Arthur, during which, while on the outskirts of the forest of Mirkwood, he is forced to return to Britain when he learns of the betrayal of his son, Mordred. Already with his morale wounded by the infidelity of his wife Guinevere with the now exiled leader of the knights Lancelot, Arthur rallies the knights loyal to him for the final battle against the rebel Mordred and his foreign mercenaries. Filled with power, passion, and vivid imagery, the poem vividly showcases the unique narrative talent of the great J.R.R. Tolkien. Included are three informative texts by Christopher Tolkien, where the literary universe of King Arthur's stories is explored, the deeper meaning of the verses is revealed, and the special relationship between The Fall of Arthur and the author's masterpiece, The Silmarillion, is identified. The Greek translation uses the iambic fifteen-syllable meter. The translated poem coexists with the original so that, combined with the translator's footnotes, the reader can better understand the legend that has fascinated audiences for centuries.
