"The Fall of Arthur" is an unfinished poem by J.R.R. Tolkien, which was retrieved from the archives by his son Christopher. It narrates the last campaign of the legendary King Arthur, during which, while in the outskirts of Mirkwood forest, he is forced to return to Britain upon learning of the betrayal by his son, Mordred.
Already with his morale wounded by the infidelity of his wife Guinevere with the now exiled leader of the knights, Lancelot, Arthur rallies the knights loyal to him for the final battle against the rebel Mordred and his foreign mercenaries.
Full of strength, passion, and vivid imagery, the poem prominently showcases the unique narrative talent of the great J.R.R. Tolkien. Included are three informative texts by Christopher Tolkien, where the literary universe of King Arthur's stories is explored, the deeper meaning of the verses is revealed, and the special relationship between "The Fall of Arthur" and the author's masterpiece, "The Silmarillion," is identified.
In the Greek translation, the iambic fifteen-syllable meter is used. The translated poem coexists with the original so that, in combination with the translator's footnotes, the reader can better understand the legend that has fascinated the public for centuries.
