"Atheism in Christianity" encapsulates Ernst Bloch's philosophical thought on the phenomenon of religion in general, and Christianity and Judaism in particular. For Bloch, religion does not belong to the paleontological museum of history, but rather, especially in its biblical version, constitutes a work of the fundamental transcendent impulse of humanity, which creates utopian projections towards the future, towards what has not yet come. Materialism without transcendence is blind, transcendence without matter is crippled. The author draws on a multitude of biblical, theological, philosophical, and literary texts to illuminate and support his position. Bloch's philosophy of hope meets the theology of hope of biblical thought, mystical theology, and modern Western theology.
