Description
1930s and in Piraeus, the "Famous Quartet of Piraeus" is at its peak. The tough guys of the era listen to the group that highlighted Piraeus Rebetiko, and the dens resemble places of worship for the bouzouki. Members of the group are Markos Vamvakaris, Anestis Delias, Giorgos Batis, and Stratos Pagioumtzis. The pre-war work of the first three individuals is the subject of study in this edition.
The reader will initially get to know the lifestyle of the era and be introduced to the rebetiko idiom. Then, there are separate chapters for each composer, which include biographical details, lists of their compositions, recording and analysis of selected songs, and the characteristics of their work.
Particular emphasis was placed on the detailed recording of the bouzouki melody (or the baglama in the case of Batis) and the in-depth musicological and lyrical analysis of the songs, with special reference to the playing style, the tunings, and the interpretive-executive technique. Finally, a comparative study of the three and the conclusions of the research are presented.
