The WD 0F27610 Ultrastar SATA 8TB hard drive for businesses features up to 10 times the workload rating of desktop drives.
It uses advanced technologies for:
Designed to be an ultra-robust storage device, Ultrastar drives are the right solution for the enterprise.
Specifications are collected from official manufacturer websites. Please verify the specifications before proceeding with your final purchase. If you notice any problem you can report it here.
I have been using the 10TB Helium monster for about 1 year without any issues, divided into 5 GPT partitions with NTFS format. I have powered it with SATA that receives voltage from molex because otherwise it wouldn't start due to the unsupported Power Disable (PWDIS) feature of SATA. The disk is very fast, I haven't run any tests but for regular applications, it gives the impression of being an SSD, only in large video files of 1-2GB it will delay for 1 sec.
What you pay is what you get they say... It may cost around €320 but it offers 10TB and even with the best specifications (it also has a 5-year warranty). I have bought 2 of these drives and I have them in RAID 1 mirror for exclusive data storage use and so far I believe the investment was worth it. The system in which they are installed works at least 15 hours daily and there is also a significant use of the data, but the performance is consistently satisfactory, so my opinion is clearly that they deliver what they promise and they are worth their money and more.
I bought it at the end of August 2019. I think it came defective from day one. The disk seems to be functioning (I have it in software raid 1 with a similar one), and I keep receiving notifications that the disk will die soon. The SMART shows a value of 67 in "Seek Error Rate" (and unnormalized over 5 million errors). And I feel desperate that I have to go through the process of checking and replacing. It will take weeks...
The King of HDD at 10TB!!!
Although it is heavy as a brick, it can work under very adverse conditions.
Every day I transfer huge 4K RAW video files, it remains fast and cool when idle. It is recommended only for specialized use, depending on the model you choose.
Pay attention to the models you will receive, especially for those who intend to use it for external RAID Arrays. If the device does not support Power Disable, the disks will never start!!!
The "WD Ultrastar DC-HC510" series of 10TB drives is actually Hitachi HGST and provides various models. All are AF (either 512e or 4Kn). They feature 5th generation HelioSeal technology, so they are hermetically sealed and contain a sun-based mixture. Also, some models (all newer ones from 8/19 onwards) are compatible with the Power Disable Feature (so they use PIN:3 of the Power SATA cable differently), while older models are not.
In the case that the drives are intended for installation in a PC with a power supply incompatible with Power Disable, use power supply from a Molex cable with an adapter to SATA.
I don't need to say that a system with UEFI (instead of Legacy BIOS) is required to correctly detect it.
In a few words: The most reliable, fast, quiet, and energy-efficient HDD on the market!!!
I have already purchased two for Video&Fx libraries (4K RAW and Prores RAW HQ files) and I am planning to buy two more soon.
Their performance in reading and writing large 2-5TB files is consistently excellent, without any fluctuations or high temperatures (only a 1°C increase from idle to max, i.e. 39/40°C). I highly recommend it to those who need a heavy workload of up to 550TB per year and 24/7 operation.
The WD Ultrastar DC-HC510 at 10TB is the pinnacle of vertical magnetic recording (PMR) hard drives. It implements Hitachi's (HGST, owned by WD) 5th generation Helioseal innovation, which introduced helium into the space where the heads and platters are located. As a result of this technique, the disk does not breathe like the others but is hermetically sealed. This makes it immune to external influences and, as the company describes it, "can work unimpeded in sandstorm conditions." It features 256MB Cache, Dual-Stage micro actuator, RVS, Dual safe firmware, rebuild assist mode, Media Cache, MTBF of 2.5 million hours, AFR of 0.35%, 600K cycles, and of course, a 5-year warranty!!!
PERFORMANCE:
CrystalDiskMark Sequential Q32T1 Read/write: 255/252 MB/sec
ATTO Disk Benchmark from 32KB-64MB with almost identical read/write performance: 252/250 MB/sec.
