Description
This manual is a choir teaching method for children in the first grades of Primary School (6-8 years old). It includes a selection of songs that correspond to the vocal range and vocal abilities of children of this age. This first volume is a complete annual teaching method for children who are starting to sing in a children's or school choir or in group singing within the framework of music lessons at school.
The method includes two books:
a) The teacher's book: it contains the repertoire of the selected songs and is accompanied by a triptych: 1) information about each song, 2) learning objectives, and 3) teaching guide for each song.
b) The student's book: it contains the same songs, accompanied by practical exercises that systematically teach musical elements related to each specific song and help the child learn to read sheet music.
The goal of the method is to teach children:
- Healthy head voice and singing ability in the correct pitch
- Recognition of basic notation of choral sheet music
- Basic elements of music reading and not just memorization of the taught songs
- Recognition of rhythmic and melodic patterns
- Musical forms
- Basic body movement elements combined with singing, elements that important music educators, such as Dalcroze and Orff, have successfully incorporated into their teaching for children of this age.
- An initial introduction to the families of string, wind, percussion, and keyboard musical instruments.
The musical material comes from Greek and foreign melodies, translated into Greek for easier learning by young children. The songs are written in suitable tonalities for the vocal range of children aged 6-8 years old, without exposing the voice to extreme ranges. The songs are in unison, and a series of rules are presented within the flow of the method's lessons, which can be taught and performed in a concert, either in unison or in two groups, depending on the number and abilities of the children.
This specific musical material has been developed through the implementation of a standardized experimental program that the author has been applying since 2009 to children of this age. The two-part rules function as the primary polyphonic experience for children, helping them progress to polyphonic choral works in the next stage of their choral education.
The themes of the songs vary so that they can be used for concerts throughout the school year, and there is also a small collection of Christmas songs, vocally suitable for young children.
This method is the first volume of choir teaching for young children aged 6-8 years old and is followed by the second volume for children aged 8-10 years old (under development), where the transition from unison and simple rules to more complex two-part polyphony is made through authentic choral works from the Greek and international choral repertoire.
