Reviews
The plotter was purchased for use in a technical office along with its stand and the L24ei scanner, replacing a legendary HP Designjet 500, which was facing compatibility issues with Windows 10.
Starting with the positives, the print quality is very good, not only for CAD drawings but also for full-color posters that I printed as a test (using the appropriate paper, of course), where the result is impressive. The printing speed is also truly incomparable compared to older machines, and aesthetically, the Canon is very presentable with decent plastic materials and fits nicely in the space. Finally, ink consumption is quite satisfactory, as for 350m2 of printing, which corresponds to approximately 700 A1 prints (mostly black and white linear drawings with some colored elements), I needed the initial inks that come with the machine plus another set of 130ml inks, of which the matte black was fully used and the remaining 4 reached about halfway. Even greater savings can be achieved by purchasing the 300ml inks, at least for the matte black which is used more. Lastly, it is positive that the Canon system allows for the purchase of the scanner at a later time, which can be attached as an additional component on top of the plotter, in case the budget does not allow for both to be purchased simultaneously.
Moving on to the negatives, unfortunately, almost all modern machines, in their pursuit of increased print quality and resolution, have too many expensive consumables compared to older generation machines. For example, in this particular case, it has two black inks instead of one (matte black for drawings and black for graphics) and a maintenance cartridge (a container where the ink that is "lost" during cleaning, etc., is deposited). The worst of all is the print head, which also gave us an error exactly at 350 square meters of printing (2 years and 3 months of operation). The replacement cost is 400-450 euros, while the plotter costs 700, which says it all. The final blow is that when replacing the print head, the new one "consumes" a large amount of ink (20-30% of the 130ml cartridges), filling the maintenance cartridge by about 40%. As an indication, the print head of the equivalent modern HP machines has approximately twice the lifespan (5-6 years) with a similar cost, while Epson promises a print head with the same lifespan as the machine. The above information was provided by an authorized technician whom I unfortunately needed to consult afterwards. This is undoubtedly the main reason why Canon's solution has a significantly lower purchase cost compared to the competition.
The total cost of printing (paper-ink-machine purchase, etc.) until the print head error was approximately calculated at 1000€ for the 700 A1 prints, which is about 1.40€ per A1, while most photocopies charge from 1.50€ for black and white A1 and from 2€ for color. Therefore, it is slightly more economical, although the main advantage is the convenience of being able to print in your own space at any time. In my opinion, colleagues who are looking for a modern plotter should pay special attention to the cost of operation and not just the initial purchase cost before making such an investment.
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful?I am an engineer and I would like to share my experience with future potential buyers of a Canon image Prograf TM-200 Plotter 24". I purchased it brand new exactly 2 years ago and it presented a hardware head problem, with a total print area of 350m². When I contacted Canon's technical department, they informed me that regardless of the number of prints and usage, the head needs to be replaced every 2 years, which means a cost of approximately €450, more than 50% of the machine's value. If you consider that the cost of printable square meters of designs, if I were to give them to a print shop, is lower than the cost of purchasing the head, it is clear that this machine is unprofitable and problematic. A similar HP 430 plotter worked for over 15 years without any head problems and had printed thousands of square meters. I would not recommend it for purchase to fellow engineers. The conclusions are up to you...
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful? In a few words, FLAWLESS for professional use in an architectural office - Be careful to get it at a good price because its price has fluctuated excessively in a year - it has reached 530 euros up to 1000 .... at 600 euros that I bought it, it is really worth it.
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful? The printer is excellent, having printed more than 450m2 there is no problem. Fast and easy to use. Large ink cartridges are cost-effective. The only negative is that once the black ink runs out, it may also affect the colored ones, but overall it is economical
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful? From HP 750+, obviously day and night. Very fast, amazing colors, however in images and generally where there is a lot of color (e.g. solid hatch), it leaves a lot of ink, resulting in the plain printing paper (90gr) getting wet and folding locally. I believe this can be solved somehow, but I haven't found a way yet (At HP, this is automatically solved by selecting the paper).
Update: After 6 months of use, an issue that arises is the presence of an error during printing, not printing the selected print in its entirety. In every print, regardless of printing the same thing again, you have to reselect the dimensions of the paper. That's why I deduct one star from the initial review.
Update 7-12-21: Solution to the problem I mentioned, the "Preview before printing" option in the printer settings, in addition to the option provided by various programs such as Autocad.
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful? After 18 months of light use it simply fell apart...
