Description

When examining the phenomenon of family, and more generally of sociality, anything belonging to the field of feelings is often assigned to psychology. However, feelings, even the most spontaneous ones, also have a social origin. Therefore, a consideration of the power framework and the correlation of economic and symbolic forces that govern relationships within and between families is needed, along with a new analytical technique capable of tracking the formation and circulation of feelings between parents and children or among the children themselves, and their impact on marital choices and kinship relations. This is what Bernard Vernier's ethnographic study attempts, based on thorough field research in Karpathos. In a society like that of Karpathos, where a unique kinship system in Europe is preserved to this day, individuals tend to choose as partners those who share the names of their beloved relatives. Thus, a unique opportunity is provided to sociologically test the hypotheses of thinkers like Freud and Stekel regarding the "incestuous" choice made based on a baptismal name. The original dialogue between the anthropology of emotions and the theory of practice highlights Greece as a place for discussing the central issues of contemporary social science.
