Description

The Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED is an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that offers such edge-to-edge sharpness that it can surpass that of an equivalent prime lens. For this reason, and for its build quality, it is considered one of the best wide-angle zoom lenses available.

The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology provides fast autofocus with exceptional accuracy and extremely quiet operation. The internal focusing (IF) mechanism allows autofocus without changing the length of the lens. Like all G-Type Nikkor lenses, it does not have an aperture ring, making the lens lighter and smaller. Thus, the aperture must be selected each time from the camera body.

The lens construction is designed for professional use and is resistant to dust and moisture. There is a nano-crystal coating to reduce ghosting and flare, along with 2 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and PGM aspherical elements that help control chromatic aberrations. This enhances the sharpness and contrast of the image even further.

I rented it for beta testing on the D750 during my vacation to see how useful it can be for my work. Messinian Gulf, Methoni Castle, Voidokilia and many more. In total, about 650 clicks. All with this lens. From 1/4000 and absolute light to 30" and absolute darkness.
Sturdy and compact construction. It has fast AF, but it failed in extremely low light. I gave it to focus on a rock at 200 meters and it focused on half a meter.
The distortions, even at the edges, are small and easily correctable, as well as the vignetting.
Although there are several high-quality primes out there, the flexibility of focal lengths covered by the 14-24mm lens, I think, puts it high on the list for both outdoor and indoor use, from a building to a landscape.

Apart from sharpness and color quality, this lens is worth its money because it manages to tame the distortions that a wide-angle lens like this could have. Anyone who tries it indoors will appreciate its value even more, especially professionals.
The downside for me is in tests I have done outdoors against the sun, it creates flares and generally unpleasant reflections that are difficult to correct even if the sun is barely out of frame, despite being advertised otherwise. For example, Nikon's 24-70 2.8 has much better performance against the sun, as do other quality Nikon lenses that I have tried.

I would not recommend it to beginner hobbyists. For hobbyists who do not have much experience, I would recommend thinking carefully before buying it, considering what they want to do, as wide-angle lenses rely on field curvature, causing objects to be pushed away, especially in the center, and thus often losing the sense of the initial scene, what we see with our own eyes before lifting our camera to take a photo.
