Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, the twin brother of Artemis, god of music and prophecy. The pregnant Leto was searching for a place to give birth to her children, but everyone turned her away out of fear of Hera's wrath. Only a complex island, Ortygia, accepted her, and Apollo, full of gratitude, anchored the island in the center of the Aegean and named it Delos ("bright").
