Description

The publishing house Belle Epoque presents, for the first time in Greece, a series of graphic novels exclusively focused on the historical journey of a sports club - specifically the Panathinaikos Athletic Club!

The series is titled 1908. The title of the 1st volume is "The Birth of an Idea." It deals with the sports revolution attempted by Giorgos Kalafatis, an 18-year-old track and field champion, when he founded the Athens Football Club (today's Panathinaikos). Facing the entire sports establishment, which was attached to classical athletics and gymnastics, he attempted something unthinkable for the perceptions of the time: the establishment of a purely football club.

The pages of the 1st volume take us to the Intercalated Games of 1906, to the gymnasium of Panellinios in Pedion tou Areos, and to the inauguration of the stadium on Patission Street. The Sunday strolls of Athenians in Polygono to see the army band, the evening retsina races on the city's main streets, the euphoria and the renaissance atmosphere of the Belle Epoque, are captured by the pencil, inks, and markers of illustrator Petros Baltas. The plot was written by historian and journalist Andreas Oikonomou, with respect to historical reality, giving a starring role (in the first volumes) to Giorgos Kalafatis and the legendary Olympian Kostis Tsiklitiras.

The aim of "1908" is, like every comic, to entertain. At the same time, however, it aims to teach sports principles and values, which are rare in our days. It is addressed to young and old fans; to nostalgics of a beautiful and romantic era, as well as to parents who want to "shape" children with sportsmanship.
