In the 1940s, Greece was a battleground for devastating military conflicts for a long period. First during World War II, then during the Civil War. The Nazi occupation, from 1941 onwards, was extremely brutal. Children died of hunger on the streets of Athens. Heroic acts of resistance provoked violent reprisals. As soon as Greece was finally liberated from the German boot, the shattered nation faced a civil war. In this book, the distinguished historian David Brewer explores this turbulent decade of modern Greek history, examines the involvement of foreign powers, especially Britain and the USA, and their efforts to support the unpopular government in Athens, and outlines prominent figures—from the fields of politics, military, and culture—who shaped this significant period. Brewer also attempts to examine history from the individual's perspective, the dilemmas faced on a personal level by people caught between the wheels of Resistance and the occupiers during the Occupation, and the opposing political forces in the Civil War. Brewer's perspective, views, and interpretations regarding the conflicts and forces that shaped modern Greece make this book a work of vital importance for anyone interested in World War II and modern Greek history.

Excellent book, it provides the image of the era without biasing the reader towards any side, quite well-documented opinions from the author. It also leaves room for the reader to form their own picture of the events of the time and how in certain cases they come to influence the present.
Like all history books, it is easy to understand. Enlightening as we should see things from multiple perspectives. Overall, the 3 books summarize our history for the past five centuries. I recommend them.
