“I named my narrative a novel because, while writing, I realized that the reconstruction of the past relies not only on memory but also on imagination, an active imagination that can stir emotions without lying about the facts.” Apostolos Doxiadis narrates his life from early childhood to adulthood. At the center of the narrative, he places politics, observation, experience, and later action. In an environment that is constantly changing for the worse, a child tries to understand what the adults around him experience as an unstable parliamentary democracy, shaping his character and ideas in continuous interaction with events. The coup of April 1967 brings dramatic changes to the country and the narrator's family. The peak of the student movement finds him active in the resistance against the dictatorship, in a Left with grand visions and endless disputes, engaged in a struggle that sometimes seems thrilling and sometimes hopeless, but always necessary and dangerous.

The book constantly holds the interest. Although it is autobiographical, it reads like a well-written novel. We learn a lot about our recent history and it is thought-provoking. I recommend it for both young and older readers, it has a lot to offer to everyone. Congratulations to Mr. Doxiadis!
