The disk was purchased for use in my Asustor NAS.
The disk has been tested on corporate servers, and for this reason, I said that it is worth the investment at home.
The DC HC310 7K6 has three formats and requires ATTENTION! It comes in 512n (m/n 0B35950), 512e (m/n 0B36040), and 4kn (m/n 0B35948).
- The 512n is the old protocol, and it is formatted in 512-byte sectors. This protocol is compatible with 99.999% of existing hardware, both old and new. The data transfer speed is 233MB/s.
- The 512e is the newer protocol and is formatted in 4096 bytes, which the disk emulates as 512 bytes. As the newest protocol, it is not compatible with many older hardware. The data transfer speed is 255MB/s.
- The 4kn is the newest format, with 4096 bytes, and it works in both physical and logical modes. It is the fastest and provides the most space. The downside is that it is not compatible with older hardware and software. The data transfer speed is 255MB/s.
The experience at a corporate level is as follows, regarding 512n & 512e disks:
- The disks are quiet, both when starting from a cold or hot boot and when under stress. WD has really found the trick to reducing noise.
- The disks are really fast in data transfer and RAID rebuild. RAID synchronization in BTRFS, EX4, NTFS in RAID 0/6/10 takes about 45 minutes during production operation or 20 minutes if the server is idle. At home, the NAS took 1.5 hours, obviously due to hardware differences between a €25,000 NAS server and a €1200 NAS at home. Data transfer is stable at 233MB/s or 255MB/s, depending on the disk. In my case, the 512n (m/n 0B35950) in RAID 6 achieves 233MB/s in writing and 700MB/s in reading.
- In servers, they do not have overheating issues, but in my NAS, I noticed that when idle, they reach 44 °C, 4 °C higher than the WD Red Plus, and 55 °C under stress, or 10 °C higher than the WD Red Plus.
- The durability is epic! In the company, the disks last for 5.5 years of continuous operation. This is in comparison to the Seagate Exos, which would fail after 4 years.
There is a lot of noise while reading. I had to put my NAS in a closet in my library so I wouldn't hear it, and still, late at night, I hear the needle making 'tick'..'tick' every 10 seconds.
Anyway, I have searched the world to find disks with 'silent' comments and unfortunately, someone always has something to say...
