Description

The primary concern that predominantly governs the endeavor of writing this book is related to the issue of managing the phenomenon of urban-folk music creation in a strictly theoretical yet concurrently fruitful and functional manner. Thus, beyond its inherent scientific-musicological nature, the book also carries a purely practical dimension, as it could well serve as a methodical theoretical summary or as a teaching manual regarding the learning of urban-folk music of the Interwar period.
Specifically, all the individual phenomena classified within the system of Folk Roads are examined in detail, and their basic structural characteristics are defined, which are substantiated through references to corresponding repertoire cases using visual aids. Issues of modal behavior, melodic development, phenomena of idiomatic expression are also discussed, while the basic principles of each road in terms of its harmonic management are briefly presented. For the cases of Folk Roads that have a parallel counterpart in the realm of Ottoman makam or are frequently managed within the framework of 78 rpm discography according to ala turca aesthetic standards, special mention is made through analysis of the individual intervallic, stylistic, and technical peculiarities accompanying these cases.

The book includes 70 and more original notations of interwar urban songs in the staff with detailed morphological-modal analysis. This specific repertoire corpus, combined with its corresponding theoretical management, could undoubtedly serve as a stimulus and reference point, especially in the field of the teaching process concerning the study and performative depiction of urban-folk music of the Interwar period.
