Description
Are you bothered by the forms from always, the vote, the computer? But what would you say if you learned that there was ex uranothen in Homer, that the words mountain and rock were born as ho bounos in ancient Greek and to brachos in Hellenistic Koine, and that the fairy etymologically comes from the Nereid with paronymy? This book focuses on a basic category of linguistic change in the Greek language, morphological change (and consequently lexical change), aiming to concisely capture the what, how, and why of the changes. Specifically, it attempts, based on modern theories, to classify the phenomena of morphological change with examples from the entire history of the Greek language, to present the mechanisms of modification and their relationship, and to interpret the causes of the changes. The study of the fascinating world of the diachrony of the Greek language helps to answer questions such as: - How "similar" are ancient Greek, Hellenistic, and medieval Greek to modern Greek common in morphological terms? - Does the language change over time based on specific and systematic mechanisms, and if so, how transparent are these processes and what purpose do they serve? This book is addressed to those interested in the history of the Greek language. Especially for undergraduate/postgraduate students of linguistics, it can be a valuable tool and a trigger for research work. The analysis is accompanied by a glossary and index of terms, an index of pieces, and an appendix of diagrams.
