Description

European citizenship, which grants rights in addition to national rights to the citizens of the EU member states, and the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) ("Area"), within which rights for European citizens and third-country nationals were also developed, constitute two fundamental, albeit different and initially at least, parallel developing fields of European integration. The aim of this work is to analyze the way they are reconciled by placing European citizenship within the framework of the "Area", analyzing the relevant acquis/policies/jurisprudence, while also taking into account the impact of current developments and challenges (economic, refugee/migration crisis, security crisis, Brexit...) on these fields of the integration project. In other words, after an approach to the gradual connection of these two fields, an attempt is made to answer burning and timely questions such as: Why is the "Area" important for understanding European citizenship and its evolution? How does the formation of such an "Area" affect the development of European citizenship? Are European citizenship rights developed for third-country nationals? How are the European citizenship rights of European citizens-third-country nationals affected by the crises that have plagued the EU in the last decade? Ultimately, in this context, do the rights of European citizenship for European citizens-third-country nationals converge or diverge?
