Tracheostomy gauze and tracheostomy in general

A tracheostomy is the surgical opening of the trachea and the placement of a special tube (tracheostomy tube) within it, aiming to ventilate the patient by bypassing the upper respiratory tract. The reasons that may require it vary. Patients who may also need a tracheostomy are those suffering from conditions leading to upper airway obstruction or increased production of secretions from the bronchi and lungs. Such conditions include congenital abnormalities of the upper respiratory tract in children, airway injury from smoke or chemicals, severe allergies or infections, patients in a comatose state, diseases of the nervous or musculoskeletal system, spinal injuries, etc. Finally, patients who have swallowing problems (e.g., after a stroke) may also need a tracheostomy until they can swallow normally again.

A tracheostomy may be performed urgently in any setting, such as in the case of acute airway obstruction, or electively in the operating room, which is more common. A tracheostomy can be temporary, meaning sometimes the stoma will close, or permanent for life, as in a laryngectomy.

Useful Tips

The incision is cleaned if dirty with sterile saline solution. If needed, a new clean dressing (special material or simple gauze) is applied. Gauze should not be cut because fibers can enter the incision and cause infection or granulomas. A dressing is necessary for the first 24 hours after the tracheostomy operation or if there is discharge or blood around the incision. In most cases, the tracheostomy tube can be removed from patients whose condition is improving. The hole will close, and the person will be able to breathe normally.
