Description
"The "Charles, the most serene, chosen by God, great and peaceful Augustus", as stated in the beginning of his comprehensive title from 801, this peacemaker and also "per misericordiam Dei" (by the mercy of God) ruling emperor, who named himself from 802 as "imperator christianissimus" (most Christian emperor) and (allegedly) died with the words of the 31st psalm: "Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit", this man organized one massacre after another during his 46-year reign, from 768 to 814, conducted almost constant wars, almost 50 campaigns, and only for two years, 790 and 807, did he not slaughter. [...]
He fought in calculated, almost exclusively aggressive wars, and with these events he pushed countless people to death, in an often horrifying, torturous death. However, he did not only murder in war, but also killed 4,500 prisoners and forced thousands of families to be displaced." (karlheinz Deschner)
