Description

The British historian David Brewer analyzes the developments in the Greek region from the Fall of Constantinople to the Revolution of 1821, focusing particularly on those characteristics of Ottoman administration that concerned the way of life of the Greek-speaking Christian inhabitants of the Ottoman Empire. How free were the Greeks? Were they subjugated and, if so, in what sense? How close to the truth are widespread perceptions regarding issues such as the devshirme, conversions to Islam, oppressive taxation, and the secret school? What was the role of the Orthodox Church during this period?

Very commendable book... Essentially, it presents the conditions prevailing during the Ottoman Empire and addresses the functioning and behavior of the respective officials and institutions of the time. Very nice presentation and analysis of the book's chapters...

Like all history books, it is easily understandable. Enlightening as we should see things from multiple perspectives. Overall, the 3 books summarize our history for the past five centuries. I recommend them.

The book is excellent for someone who wants to learn about what was happening in Greece during that period, and who can handle learning facts that debunk myths and prejudices. The text is very well-written and is a very enjoyable read. It has nice subtle comments from the author and targeted humor where needed. I have also read Greece 1940-1949 by Brewer, which is also excellent.
