Based on his experiences from the Spanish Civil War, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was considered by critics as the author's masterpiece and one of the best war novels of all time. It describes four days in the life of the hero and protagonist Robert Jordan, an American who has been sent as a dynamiter to blow up a strategically important bridge. Just four days, in late spring of 1937 in Spain, specifically in the forests around Segovia. During these critical days, Jordan experiences a profound love in the person of the beautiful and tormented Maria, fear and anxiety in a country torn apart by the Civil War, devotion and friendship, but also superstition in the faces of the Spanish guerrillas. Death lurks everywhere around him, giving all emotions a completely different dimension and intensity. [Excerpt from the text on the back cover of the edition]
