  I spent quite a bit of time (and 20 bucks on a Chinese site to buy a silly thing) figuring out the basic features of a simple Bluetooth receiver that would still provide decent sound. Obviously, it's the codecs, stupid! and this one supports aptX, which is a basic requirement for compressed music from streaming or MP3 to sound good through your analog sound system (in my case, a Panasonic RX-DT75 Cobra boombox that had been sitting neglected on a shelf for years). So this particular receiver ticks all (almost) the boxes: aptX and aptX HD, easy installation, instant connection, good range without interruptions (room size 6x5m), small and discreet size and design. It has two outputs (3.5mm and digital Toslink) and also provides a 3.5mm to RCA adapter for connection to a hi-fi system. In practice, the sound quality on the Panasonic seems to be limited only by the sound quality of the source; the better the file, the better the performance, very close to listening from the boombox's CD. Its two downsides are: 1) The power supply with a mini-USB cable instead of type-C (though a cable and charger are included in the box) and 2) Its price, which is certainly lower than, say, an iFi Zen, but with a little research on Chinese sites, you can find similar receivers (once you figure out exactly what to check on the spec sheet) for half the price. I imagine this is related to the fact that (perhaps) it is made in the Netherlands and not in China, as the company's headquarters is in the Netherlands (but I couldn't find a "made in" label on the device itself or its packaging).
