Description
Thirty days schools closed in Evros.
Thirty days camps empty.
Soldiers at the river.
In battle positions against the Turks.
Then we killed each other.
Evros 1967. A few months after the April coup. A probationary officer, without connections and with suspicious beliefs, is transferred there and begins his wandering in units in Orestiada, Didymoteicho, and Alexandroupoli.
He doesn't send letters to anyone. He constantly writes his diary. The "Evros notebook". A military report and at the same time his confessions. Evros smells like war, but he goes on with his own philosophy of life. As he writes in the diary: Life is not for fear. And when you are twenty-something, you enjoy adventure. Unknown places. Girls. Love, drunkenness, brawls. Even war has an indescribable charm.
He records everything. He tries to scratch beneath the surface of things. He understands that the beauty of life is not visible unless you discover it. The army is not another world but another dimension of our world.
The diary is a mural of the border Greece in the years of the junta: Army enthusiasts, remnants of the civil war, rebellious soldiers, disobedient probationers, gamblers, scoundrels, smugglers, gossips, and suicide commandos.
But also beautiful girls, pleasure-seeking widows, and passionate couples.
Love affairs. Swagger. Big words. But also dangerous power and war games.
Opportunists and disgraced coup plotters compete for their establishment, to become the saviors of the nation and gain popular support.
But also simple soldiers, probationers and permanent officers who do not hesitate in the face of the horror of war are determined for everything.
When things get wild, everyone shows their true face. In conditions of engagement, in small scenes at the river for a month, with two meters of snow, waiting for orders to attack. This will never come, as the leadership of the military junta will shamefully retreat in the telegrams of the Turks, opening the way for the invasion of Cyprus.
Once again, as the probationary officer notes: We were defeated without war.
The tragedy culminates with the royal movement that follows and its suppression by the Aprilists, even with the murder of Greek soldiers. The destruction is unimaginable...
