Description

"WHAT YOU DIDN'T SAY," a tender and insightful narrative, the memoirs of a distinguished historian, explores the European conflicts of the 20th century through the life, hopes, and dreams of one unique family – the author's family. Investigating the special and moving stories of its members, Mark Mazower narrates the sacrifices and silences that marked a generation and its descendants. Fate led family members to experience the siege of Stalingrad, the confinement in the Vilna ghetto, the Occupation in Paris, or even find themselves in the ranks of the Wehrmacht. His British father, the son of Russian-Jewish émigrés who fled the Bolsheviks, the civil war, and the revolution and settled in London, was the lucky one of the family. Max, the author's grandfather, a socialist who had fought on the barricades against the tsar's soldiers, never spoke about it. Fruma, Max's wife, came from a family that, although tested by the Great Purges, managed to find its way in Soviet society.             A hundred years after the Russian Revolution, "What You Didn't Say" unfolds the story of a socialism erased from memory – the passionate humanistic socialism that resonated with a broad range of people. At the same time, it explores the unexpected happiness that may await the lost of History, the power of friendship, and the love for a place, a feeling that allowed Max and Fruma's son to consider England his homeland.   "Mark Mazower is a great historian and a sensitive and insightful writer who focuses on small human details." –ORHAN PAMUK Nobel Prize in Literature 2006   "A powerful narrative about resettlement, persecution, and survival in which we encounter a brilliant constellation of diverse figures, including senior Bolshevik officials, dedicated political activists, émigré historians, philosophers, writers, and engineers who were victims of war, ethnic cleansing, and their dangerous habit of resisting." –JEREMY HARDING Author of Border Vigils: Keeping Migrants Out of the Rich World   "A family portrait, captivating and at the same time very personal." –KIRKUS REVIEWS   BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION   MARK MAZOWER is a historian and author specializing in modern Greece, 20th-century Europe, and international issues.
