Description

After the success of the first edition, Haris Tomboulidis' book "Uranography - The History and Mythology of the Constellations" is being re-released. It is a unique case of a book. It is the result of two decades of tireless work. The usual method of gathering information for writing a book is to resort to the bibliography, printed or electronic. On the contrary, the search and examination of primary sources is a task of titanic difficulty and is akin to archaeologists. Unless a fortunate circumstance makes this task feasible. Something like that happened in this case. Haris Tomboulidis was fortunate to work at a university, that of Stockholm, with multinational staff. With admirable meticulousness, the author consulted colleagues of every nationality to verify the validity of a myth or the meaning of a name and to dig deeper to bring to light new findings, such as those that the bibliography or the internet have not yet recorded, such as those that often lie forgotten in the memories of people and nations, in what we call unwritten tradition. The author thoroughly checked his sources. The book begins with an extremely informative introduction to uranography and continues with 88 chapters dedicated to the same number of constellations in the sky. In these chapters, a large amount of information is provided with a clear distinction, so that the reader can easily and quickly find what they want: astronomical data is presented in free text, while historical-mythological data is in a text box. This distinction makes the book very user-friendly. The rich text is accompanied by tables, maps, and beautiful paintings and engravings of the constellations. The result is ultimately a book of great practical value and high aesthetics. Haris Tomboulidis' Uranography is a book that offers a lot and offers it correctly. It definitely has a place in the library of every reader who turns an interested eye to the field of astronomy.
