Description

This book is a continuation of the one titled "1915: The National Schism" and covers the interwar period up to 1940.

Despite the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the Schism was not overcome. It continued primarily as a crisis of national integration, now within the state's boundaries, with three fronts of conflict: between refugees and natives, between Greek Orthodox and national or religious minorities, and between the New Lands and Old Greece. It also persisted as a quasi-religious schism between the followers of Venizelos and those of the deceased King Constantine. It continued to have class dimensions, but with significant realignments. Finally, the National Schism as a civil war was reignited by the execution of the Six and relapsed with the 1935 Movement.

The book refutes the image of stagnation that is cultivated today. It was not "always like this" for the Neo-Hellenes and their state, as is often said. There were moments, even outside of wars, when they were capable of great achievements, utilizing external loans and foreign aid to the fullest. The book also refutes the impression of "cyclicality" that is cultivated today. The highlighting of the deadlocks that charismatic leadership entails at its decline, after the "miracles" it achieved at its peak, is also timely.
