The absorption of iron is facilitated by the presence of lactoferrin, while vitamin C increases the absorption of iron.
Lactoferrin (LF) is a multifunctional protein of the transferrin family. Specifically:
- it is a component of the immune system
- involved in iron transport
- regulates iron absorption
- controls free iron levels
In healthy individuals, almost all the iron released into the plasma binds to transferrin, limiting the production of iron-catalyzed free radicals and facilitating transport to target cells.
Iron can be stored intracellularly as ferritin, a spherical heteropolymer capable of storing more than 4,000 iron atoms.
However, the role of iron is dual; on one hand, it keeps us alive, and on the other, it can cause harmful effects. For this reason, organisms have developed complex mechanisms to ensure the constant control of its levels.
The binding of free iron ions is crucial for the protection of cellular components from uncontrolled oxidations.
There are several substances that perform this role. Another protein, similar to transferrin, is lactoferrin, which is present in the Lactofer Iron Formula, and is found in milk and certain other physiological fluids.
It is also released by phagocytes after their stimulation, possibly to neutralize the diffusion of the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species on nearby healthy tissue sections. Like transferrin, it has the ability to bind two Fe3+ atoms per protein molecule.
