When connected to a USB 3.0 port, the WD Elements Portable hard drive offers fast data transfer rates.
The small and lightweight design offers up to 5TB capacity, making the WD Elements Portable external hard drives ideal for storing and transferring files without the weight and extra cables of a large-sized external hard drive.
Compatibility with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0
With this single unit, you get compatibility with the latest USB 3.0 devices, as well as backward compatibility with USB 2.0 devices.
Fast transfer speeds
When the WD Elements portable hard drive is connected to a USB 3.0 port, it provides fast data transfer rates.
Improve your computer's performance
When your internal hard drive is almost full, your computer's performance slows down. Stop deleting files. Free up space on your internal hard drive by transferring files to your WD Elements portable hard drive and give your laptop a boost.
WD quality inside and out
We know your data is important to you. That's why we build the drive inside to our demanding requirements for durability, shock tolerance, and long-term reliability. Then we protect the drive with a durable enclosure designed for style and protection.
Specifications are collected from official manufacturer websites. Please verify the specifications before proceeding with your final purchase. If you notice any problem you can report it here.
Purchased today on March 16th, 2022 for around €50, the model with 2TB. When you receive it, format it to ntfs or exFAT from Windows, or to hfs or exFAT from Mac. Windows does not have the option to format to fat32, but you can format it from Linux or with a special program on Windows to make it compatible everywhere, although this sacrifices small file support. If it is only for Windows, NTFS is the best option.
2. I chose this one because of the brand name and its price.
3. The internal disk is from WD and does not have a SATA interface that can be adapted to a micro USB 3.0, but the disk is directly micro USB 3.0. This makes it difficult to open the case and connect it to another case or computer with the usual SATA cables if the plug breaks, in order to save your data. This is a big disadvantage for external disks, and I see that newer external disks from Toshiba are doing well. It is lightweight and practical, and you can always carry it with you.
4. The USB 3.0 cable is of average quality, and I wanted it to be a little longer. If you have it with you and don't have the cable, you can connect it with your mobile phone cable (if it is micro USB), but it will be slower because the mobile phone cable supports USB 2.0 and not the 3.0 standard.
5. I have this 2TB disk, and I store backup data on two 1TB disks for safety, because nothing is indestructible, and if it fails, I want to have half of the data on each disk instead of all together on one large disk, even if it costs more. All HDDs wear out easily over time because they have mechanical and magnetic parts, and we must keep backups because if valuable data is lost, it cannot be recovered.
6. I will also upload a screenshot from CrystalMark and the health status for the speeds it reaches at max with USB 3.0.
7. Good purchase, now we will see how well it performs, and I will evaluate it again after some time, because time will show how reliable it is.
As previous comments have mentioned (which unfortunately I didn't have the chance to read), the hard drive does not have a SATA output. It has a built-in USB controller and you cannot change the casing with another USB controller in case there is a problem and it is not recognized correctly or at all. The only option is to send it for replacement with your data inside, which if it is important and you have taken a backup, you simply don't do it and keep it as a reminder... From now on, I will make a separate purchase of the SATA hard drive and the casing, so we know where we are going...
With minimal use, and almost empty at 6 months, it started to freeze, and after a while, it finished, and the few files are gone
It is functional and fast, but when it stays idle for a long time and goes into power saving mode, it makes a loud click as if it doesn't have enough power from the USB. I have tested it from USB 2.0 to 3.2 and even in type C, this phenomenon is still observed.
The first image is very good, its speed is even better than described, as I calculated that it takes about 11 seconds per gigabyte. Its small size is also very good.
Far and beloved! Slow fragile poor quality. Look for something in an SSD to be safer your data
It is the second same hard drive I buy and I am very satisfied, as it works perfectly.

Update after approximately one year of use:
CrystalDiskInfo gives it a 40% health status.
I have purchased this product 4 times, twice it arrived damaged and it was always in a display condition!!! I lost all the files I had inside!!!
The computer takes too long to recognize it, and the television doesn't even recognize it at all. When it manages to connect, file transfer is definitely not USB3 (50-60mb/s). Unfortunately, I also just realized that it's not SATA, so I can't simply put it in another enclosure. I only use it once a month for backup, and I wonder when it will fail me... Very bad purchase. It's just an SSD with a cheap casing, that's it.
I will not write about speeds, connectivity, etc. Many others have already written about them below.
I am writing a comment to point out the following: In case you want to open it, for example due to some damage, IT DOES NOT HAVE A SATA interface. So, this specific type of hard drive can only be read through USB, which is connected to SATA through a circuit. A big negative for me, maybe this is also why the price point is explained.
Personally, I have 5 WD elements (2*4TB and 3*5TB), for four years now, and none of them have crashed on me yet.
I have bought it twice, once in 2020 and once in 2023. Not because the first one broke, but because after 3 years and so many advancements in the field of technology, it continued to be the best choice/cost-quality-capacity combination.
Quiet and reliable, I highly recommend it. The only negative thing about it is that I will have to somehow mark it externally to distinguish it from the first one! (Just a joke)
Very good and reliable, personally I only use it for backup so I can't express an opinion on daily use.. but it does its job!
The television doesn't read him at all. Only the computer. Other similar hard drives from other companies are read by the television.
Very decent for what you want
The requirements are not high (SATA 300)
A very fast and reliable external hard drive, I would have liked it to be a bit better constructed but it's still good. Sometimes it crashes when transferring large RAW photo files, but I can't say for sure if it's the hard drive's fault.
I have had it for about 1 month, very good so far. I have connected it to my NAS to extend its capacity and it is very fast in transferring data from the NAS to the USB disk, about 50-70mb/s. Its durability will show over time, but so far I am very satisfied
All good. Connected very easily, very good construction and fast data transfer. Completely silent. Does not heat up. Highly recommended
It looks great with good speeds (connected externally with a USB 3 cable for transferring multiple files with a total size of 5GB+, and the speed was between 88 and 94MB/s). So, all good.
I bought 3 identical 2TB drives in the last 4 months. 2 of them failed on me. So much work and time wasted. Such a shame!!!
Once I used it for backup and now that I plugged it in again, it's broken and it freezes my computer. It doesn't even repair, nothing, it's just trash. I had it for good company, but it's gone too...
Small but very spacious with 5TB of storage, always securely deleted and stored in a safe place. You don't mess around with that much data haha. Overall, I'm satisfied with the price I found it for.
Update:
The cable connecting to the hard drive probably wasn't making good contact because the computer was showing a disconnecting/connecting phenomenon on its own as if it wasn't making good contact. I tried another cable and it worked
As an engineer, you should wait for the "eject" process to complete before removing the device, to avoid data loss. I learned this the hard way. Also, if you have it connected to an unpowered hub, it's very risky due to power fluctuations and potential data loss when another device is connected.
I have had it for several years and I can say that it is a very good disk for backup, I had no issues until now, the speeds are normal. It is worth its money.
I have two identical ones. With very light use for storage only, three years later neither is recognized by any device. I had taken them for double backup, damn them. The only thing you ask of such devices, especially since you have them to store valuable data (e.g. photos) and you don't use them daily but minimally (only when copying new data to them), is NOT TO BREAK FOR NO REASON. They didn't fall, they weren't hit, nothing. Therefore, they are for throwing away.
At 84€, the 4TB without external power supply and while the 6TB ready-to-deliver are at 140-150€, I think it's a one-way street as an option. It shows quality and speed. I hope it withstands over time. It comes with a wd application that is for network drives and this one doesn't even see it (maybe because it's not a network drive)
Minimum usage for years. It remains flawless without ever creating a problem. Satisfied
Very good for its use, as I use it on a smart TV for recording and more.
Very good and fast without freezing.!!
Exactly two and a half years after purchase (with a two-year warranty), with minimal and careful use (I only had it as a backup), suddenly one day it was not recognized by any computer... I don't know what went wrong, I just know I won't be buying Western Digital again. It's better to get two Chinese ones for half the price and double the storage...
I have had this disk for almost 1 year and it hasn't had any issues (it's connected to a laptop). It's worth every penny of its price!!!
Necessary for storing our photos and videos, which we capture every moment of our lives with our mobile phones every day. But what do we do when we have filled our phone with photos and videos? Of course, we need to store these invaluable moments somewhere safe. And there is a solution through this disk. That is, a backup of our moments on the backup is the best thing
I got him to backup another hard drive of a different brand that had a malfunction. He worked tirelessly for 2 days to retrieve the data. He worked and still works well. So far so good.
