There are stories of Middle-earth that speak of ages long before the Lord of the Rings. Such is the story of this book, which unfolds in the great land beyond the Grey Havens in the West, in regions once traversed by Treebeard, but which were later flooded by the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

Description
In that distant time, Morgoth, the Dark Lord, lived in the vast fortress of Angband, in the Iron Hell in the North. And the tragedy of Turin and his sister Nienor unfolds under the shadow of the fear of Angband and the war that Morgoth waged against the Elves.
Their brief and passionate lives are defined by the bottomless hatred that Morgoth harbored against them because they were the children of Húrin, the man who dared to defy and mock him to his face. Thus, he sends against them his most fearsome servant, Glaurung, a powerful spirit in the form of a massive wingless dragon that breathes fire. The Dark Lord and the Dragon pursue their goals in an era of barbarity and destruction, filled with hideouts, pursuits, and desperate attempts at resistance. Ruthless and all-powerful, Glaurung determined the fate of Túrin and Niënor with deceitful and diabolical lies, thus fulfilling Morgoth's curse.

Reviews
My previous contact with Tolkien is the movies + the 3 books of The Lord of the Rings. This particular book does not require any additional knowledge of Tolkien's mythology. The preface is tedious and does not particularly aid in understanding the book. The barrage of names and descriptions of the genealogical trees in the first pages should not deter you, as in the main book the heroes are specific and easily distinguishable for the reader. The plot is well-structured and is easy to read (it can be finished in 2-3 days). However, it is a tragic story (it will break your heart).
Although it is a nice book and I recommend it, I will give it 4 stars because it does not reach the grandeur and writing of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

Did you find this review helpful?A very nice book that refers to the history of Turin, as briefly mentioned in the Silmarillion.
In contrast to the other books published by Christopher Tolkien, which are based on his father's notes and unpublished texts, this particular book follows a specific chronological order and does not have as much commentary from Christopher, like "The Fall of Gondolin" or "Beren and Lúthien" for example. For those who have only read The Lord of the Rings series, they should read The Silmarillion first or at least have a general knowledge in order to understand the course of events, as the book begins after a great battle mentioned in the aforementioned book.

Did you find this review helpful?one of the three great stories of the first age of Middle-earth. definitely worth a read. you can finish it in 2-3 days. it captivates you
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful? It is the first book of Tolkien that I am reading. I don't read many books as I find it difficult to concentrate for long periods of time and they take me many days, but I read this one in three days. The story of the children of Hurin is dramatic but powerful.
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful?Excellent story!! Amazing narration, I read it in three days and could have done it in one!!! It keeps you in suspense. Wonderful plot and fantastic characters. Indeed the best story in Middle-earth (although I haven't read The Fall of Gondolin).
