  • Difficult installation. In most cases, the motherboard will need to be removed from the case. In cases with a power supply position at the bottom, it is problematic or even impossible to screw in the upper right screw of the motherboard due to the large size of the cooler. Assembly is required to be done meticulously, otherwise if it is not tightly secured to the processor's lid, the temperatures will be high. Also, it definitely requires changing the thermal paste that comes with it, as it is of poor quality and results in high temperatures. If it is not assembled properly and the thermal paste is not changed, the temperatures are dangerously high. If a component fails, troubleshooting is very difficult because accessing the RAM is difficult and removing the motherboard from the case is required, in most cases, to change the CPU. On the positive side, it is silent and efficient under certain conditions. It is not suitable for everyone and some will be dissatisfied. In my opinion, the quality-price ratio is not as good considering the difficulties it presents. The performance is good but not exceptional.

I installed the cooler on an FX 8350, on an Asrock Extreme 3 ver 2 motherboard. Asrock recommended a top-down cooler for this specific motherboard in order to cool both the processor and the motherboard. The processor is not overclocked.

    Conclusions:

    1) INSTALLATION: The installation theoretically can be simple. In my case, I encountered a problem which I describe below. I had to remove the entire motherboard from the case for it to fit. The instructions were detailed and clear. All necessary components are provided and it is compatible with both AMD and Intel. It comes with pre-applied thermal paste. *** Note if you will have access to all the screws on the motherboard after installing the cooler. In my case, I did not realize that due to the case design, one screw was under the cooler and it was very difficult to install. If you realize that you won't have access, it might be better to try installing it without removing the motherboard, as long as you have access to the back of the motherboard as it is in the case. There, a backplate needs to be installed (provided).

    2) NOISE: The cooler is indeed quiet. Especially compared to the old AMD cooler, it is heaven. Even when the processor is under full load, there is a slight whispering sound and not buzzing. The build quality is excellent.

    3) TEMPERATURES: Measured at a room temperature of 30 degrees Celsius in the summer.

I measured with AXTU - the motherboard's program - and with AMD Overdrive. The first provides temperatures and the second provides thermal margin, meaning how much temperature it still has until it reaches its limit.

    So:
    IDLE:
    AXTU > CPU 39, Motherboard 39
AMD Overdrive (thermal margin) > CPU 49, Motherboard 63

    Full load (multicore rendering):
    AXTU > CPU 66, Motherboard 40
AMD Overdrive (thermal margin) > CPU 24, Motherboard 61

Under full load, I think it was 4-5 degrees lower than the AMD cooler. It is very important that the motherboard and the RAM are also cooled along with the processor, as they are right below the cooler. Additionally, the quiet operation is a positive aspect. It is important for the case to have ventilation grills on the side so it can take in air from outside.

Excellent cooling and full silence on i5 8400 processor. I replaced the Intel cooling that came with the processor in a midi case (mastercase 3 Pro). Glory and honor to the winner, as I managed to install the air cooling without removing the motherboard. The installation was quite difficult due to the limited space I had, but I succeeded with the second attempt (with the first one, I accidentally wiped off the pre-applied thermal paste everywhere). Luckily, I had bought a Noctua paste and with the second attempt, I managed. I wonder how some people get bulkier air coolers. Other than that, it works flawlessly, the be quiet fan is perfect and silent (wish it had RGB too). It is a very good quality air cooling solution.

I have a Ryzen 2600x in a case from the same company (be quiet) with 1 intake 140mm case fan and one 120mm exhaust fan. When I was running batch processing on raw photo files, it would hit peaks between 80-85 C. With this cooler + an additional 140mm Be quiet fan (costing 9.5€), I saw a maximum of 69C. Additionally, it decreased the temperature of the SSD m.2 by 3-4 degrees - which is logical since it also gets affected and I assume the same happens with the RAM - but I hadn't measured those. The fan is a 140mm one that, with the case open for checking if everything is working, is barely audible among the other three fans of the case. When it's closed, however, in a very quiet environment, you can hear a faint whisper (keep in mind that I'm obsessed with noise).

The installation is a bit strange and requires access to the back of the motherboard since the backplate needs to be installed (included in the package for those who don't have one), and after following the (very detailed) instructions, you finally tighten the screws from the back. Like all of them nowadays, it has pre-applied thermal paste, but I preferred to wipe it off and apply Arctic.

Don't be fooled by the flatbed style, it's bulky and heavy, so if you intend to use it in a very small case (like an HTPC, for example), measure before purchasing.

Another positive is that it comes with components for installation on Intel as well, and even though it's made in China, the quality control is of the country of origin of the parent company (German). However, they do provide a shorter warranty (3 years) compared to some... Chinese ones :-D
