With Lysistrata, the struggle between History and Poetry is won by the latter, and this victory signifies that, although the cycle of blood and stupidity is recycled—the eternal return of the Same—through Poetry, this cycle receives a stunning blow, and although Poetry does not abolish this cycle, it can nonetheless expose it unabashedly naked and transform it into material for poetic use. Lysistrata is the suppression of the crushing weight of the tragedy of History, and in this sense, Comedy gains its own significance, becoming the eloquent antidote to the historical plague.
