Description

If you are asked how much area a rectangular piece of land with dimensions of 10 ket and 2 ket has, that is the question posed by problem 49 of the Egyptian papyrus written by Ahmes around 1650 BC, which informs us that the ancient Egyptians were interested in areas just as much as we are. So, we will start this second volume of Mathematics for the B' Gymnasium with the areas of plane shapes. The areas will lead us to the Pythagorean theorem, the most famous theorem in the world of Mathematics, as everyone has at least retained the name of this theorem from their school mathematics. Known to humanity at least 1,000 years before the birth of Pythagoras, it took its name from the person who most likely was the first to prove it.

For many years, direct measurement of lengths was sufficient to meet people's needs. However, when they became interested in measuring and mapping the sky, the creation of trigonometry became an urgent need. Trigonometry, the art of measuring inaccessible lengths, will occupy a significant part of this volume.

The measurement of the circle and the monumental work of Archimedes will follow. Finally, in the eighth chapter, we will attempt to soar, to detach ourselves from the plane and study the geometry of three-dimensional space, the space in which we live.

At the end of the book, the reader will find a comprehensive review plan in preparation for the recapitulation exams, with theory questions, review exercises, and indicative tests.

We hope that this book, the result of our many years of teaching Mathematics in the Gymnasium, will prove useful to its readers without becoming overly tiresome.
