Description

The manual Greek Art and Archaeology, written by university professor Dimitris Plantzos and published in 2011 by Kapon Editions, was chosen by the publishing house Lockwood Press, based in Atlanta, United States, to distribute as its first publishing venture in the field of classical archaeology. The translation of the book was done by the British archaeologist Nicola Wardle. On the occasion of the English-language edition, which is simultaneously released in Greece and Europe by Kapon Editions, the book is also reissued in Greek. The text was systematically revised, and new sections and illustrations were added. It is the first edition of its kind written by a Greek university professor and published outside Greece. The manual, which has been adopted by many university departments in our country, offers an overview of Greek archaeology from the collapse of the Mycenaean palaces to the end of the Hellenistic kingdoms (1200-30 BC). It is aimed at archaeology students, but also at anyone interested in a comprehensive and thorough presentation of the main material remnants of ancient Greek culture. The main categories of classical antiquity monuments are systematically presented, with full illustration, as a first step in the study, understanding, and interpretation of the culture of classical Greece: architecture and urban planning, sculpture and small sculpture, painting and vase painting, metalworking, jewelry making, and numismatics.
