Description

The Homily "Who is the Rich Man That Shall Be Saved?" by Clement of Alexandria thoroughly analyzes Christ's response to the rich young man on how a rich person can be saved. It is one of the earliest related efforts, because among Christians, some of whom were wealthy, there was the fear, from a literal interpretation, that wealth was an insurmountable obstacle to gaining the kingdom of heaven. The homily by Basil the Great "To the Rich" is also of related content, again prompted by Christ's response to the rich young man's question. It was delivered during the period of famine and drought in Cappadocia, with the aim, among other things, to urge the wealthy to support the poor who were suffering greatly. On the subject of wealth, which is as provocative today as it was then, the social ideas of the two Fathers provide us with a safe direction for its proper handling.
