The ideal blood pressure for healthy adults is less than 120 (systolic) and below 80 (diastolic). Values over 140 for systolic and over 90 for diastolic are considered high blood pressure. Individuals with values between 120-139 (systolic) and/or 85-89 (diastolic) are considered to have borderline hypertension and need regular monitoring.

Diagnosis of hypertension should be based on multiple measurements, as blood pressure does not remain constant. Patient monitoring for several weeks is required for an accurate diagnosis.
