My trilogy "Memory of Fire" was born from a poem by Constantine Cavafy. Reading the great Greek poet from Alexandria, I felt a challenge: why not see the world through the keyhole? Why not write about the past, narrate the grand History through the small story? In Cavafy's poem, Mark Antony's victory in Greece is described by a poor peddler, riding his donkey, hawking his wares, and no one listens to him. During one of my tours as a storyteller, I found myself one evening in the city of Ourense in Galicia. A man was frowning at me from the last row, without even blinking: a face carved by the countryside and hard work, pure bitterness. When the reading ended, he approached slowly, his eyes fixed on me, ready to skin me alive. But he didn't. He said to me: "How difficult it must be to write so simply."
Eduardo Galeano
"The Story Hunter" is the last work that Eduardo Galeano had prepared, perhaps as a gift to his readers, before he left this life in April 2015. And it is perhaps his most personal; in it, he chose to summarize the themes that marked his life, thought, and work, but also to unexpectedly open his workshop, to talk about how he was inspired to write his books, how he built his poetics; and, even more unexpectedly, to talk about his childhood, his journey, what life and death meant to him.
This personal, sometimes tender and sometimes bitter book, always embellished with his unique humor and sketches from his pen, is the postscript of a creative journey that celebrated life; the postscript of a poet who loved above all the Human.
