This compact and user-friendly lens offers the performance of a prime lens with high resolution across the entire image range. The precision optical design includes an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element to effectively minimize chromatic aberration, while spherical aberration is precisely controlled for high overall sharpness with smooth background defocus (bokeh) when needed.
Beautiful background defocus (bokeh) that highlights portraits
Spherical aberration has been precisely optimized to achieve the best possible balance between resolution and smooth, natural background defocus (bokeh), providing the perfect background for many different subjects, while the 9-blade circular aperture helps capture beautiful points of background defocus (bokeh). The 85 mm format is often the first choice of photographers for people and portraits.
Easy to transport and handle for active shooting
The compact and lightweight design that fits perfectly with the α7 series offers an excellent combination of portability and high image quality for portraits, events, and more. Although the features and advanced design of the SEL85F18 series enhance its impressive overall performance, the lightweight of 371 grams (13.1 oz.) makes it ideal for active on-the-go shooting.
Silent precision focusing mechanism
The dual linear actuator system directly controls the lens focusing mechanism without the intervention of noisy gears, for precise placement and silent operation suitable for both films and photos.
Build quality and feature versatility
On the customizable focus hold button, you can assign other functions, such as eye autofocus, while the large focus ring with high responsiveness offers improved manual focus and precision. The dust and moisture-resistant design, along with other enhancements, boosts the exceptionally high quality and photographic versatility.
Reliability in Tough Conditions
The meticulous design for dust and moisture resistance offers greater protection and ensures reliable operation in challenging conditions. Shoot with confidence in light rain or wind.

Together with the 35mm f1.8, these are two little lenses you should always have with you, whether you're doing video or photography...
VFM with closed eyes!!
In terms of performance and quality, it doesn't reach the level of the Sigma art 1.4, but at least it has half the weight and half the price. It is fast, silent, and works exceptionally well in video. It hasn't had any issues for the past two years.
Ideal lens for portraits. In combination with Sony's 35mm, this lens completes the basic package for the photographer. Very good performance even at low apertures. Excellent in low light situations where you really need good performance from a portrait lens. The only negative thing one should pay attention to is the edges, as the performance drops significantly there. Overall, however, it is a top choice.
Necessary lens for portraits! Sharp, fast, silent! The definition of value for money! Having the Sony 55 f 1.8 which is also a wonderful lens, I think that the 85 1.8 makes your life very easy, especially for events and portraits. I don't know how it is for videos. I only use it for photos.
Must lens for portrait photography, very good sharpness, personally I am not bothered by its weight on the a6600. If it had stabilization, it would be top-notch!
The lens is really sharp. I have put it on my A7III with the 24-105 4F lens and it is a wonderful lens (especially for video), but the 85mm 1.8F loses depth of field and is sharp for photography! For video, "be careful" only on tripods and gimbals, it shakes a lot!
A lens essential for video/photo, and I focus more on video because primes are widely used in serious small, medium, and large productions. The reasons are simple: 1) depth of field, 2) manual focus (pulling), 3) aesthetics, 4) speed, 5) naturalness... Not all of these are analyzed; the main point is that it is primarily a photographic lens because the electric manual focus complicates the standards of cinematography, such as preset focus points from your position and the subject! The focus wheel turns a bit wildly without strict stop positions and specific speed... however, since Sony is top-notch in autofocus, you leave it in a preset focus zone that suits the setup (flexible point, zone, single point, etc.), it just takes getting used to, and after 5 months mounted on an a7iii with automatic-manual switches, I have minimal complaints in cases of theater flow, events, etc. For photography and video on the a6300 or even on the old nex vg 30 from 2012 (aps c camcorder), whether on a tripod or gimbal, you can achieve incredible aesthetics, especially for spots (note it shakes a lot because on a crop body it becomes 130mm+)... In my opinion, the best performance for evening conditions is to be close to f2.5, f2.8 for proper color performance and good white balance adjustment... something that concerns many is the daytime recording where above f11 you have losses due to diffraction (aperture limit with loss of sharpness and colors). Perhaps some things are correct, perhaps not, because even on similar types of cameras with the same lenses and settings, we have deviations either in color performance or in overall image performance to a small degree, however... Personally, having tried zoom lenses like the kit 28-70 f3.5-5.6, the G 24-105 f4, the 16-35 f4, the 70-350 f4.5 / 6.3 G for video & photos, a prime is sharper, more true to colors, and its performance is more accurate, perhaps logically because the former have quite a few moving parts; of course, they are more comfortable because you don't need to run and chase your subject. I hope I helped.
Flawless lens. Excellent sharpness, nice bokeh, fast. The only negative is a slight chromatic aberration in high contrast scenes. I would buy it again with my eyes closed. It has been used for portraits, landscapes, and wide-field astrophotography. It writes a little colder than the 55 f1.8.
Unbelievable Lens! I've been using it for a while now... incredibly fast autofocus... very sharp... great price... you can easily compare it to someone twice the price! It's a must-have for anyone who takes portraits
Very very good lens. I use it on my Sony a7iii and Sony a6000. For its price, it's worth 1000% for anyone shooting portraits. Its quality easily matches the GM. It only has a slight difference in bokeh compared to the GM, but it's half the price and much smaller, so it's a great value for money. I highly recommend it
It is sharper than the 85mm 1.4 gmaster lens, it outperforms any other lens, even the zeiss which is twice the price, the only thing it surpasses is that the zeiss is waterproof
