Description
[...] In the 20th century, photography in archaeology follows two main paths: the purely scientific and technical recording of antiquity, which it serves as a supplement, and the aesthetic approach to ancient art, which expands the boundaries of applied archaeological photography. The purpose of this exhibition is to trace this visual dimension and describe the evolution of archaeological photography, from the travel photographic attempts of the 19th century to the creative archaeological photography of the 20th century. The exhibition consists of five sections, which describe this evolution through photographs of selected photographers whose work spans a period of one hundred and fifty years.
Each section includes photographs that highlighted new trends in the depiction of antiquities, or proposed a new perspective that "saw" beyond the obvious, implying, sometimes discreetly and sometimes directly and intensely, the creative presence of the photographer in the space. They are characteristic examples of their time, describing a journey by examining the possibilities of archaeological photography to emphasize its artistic participation, while simultaneously recording information and the subjective, usually "reality".
