Description
Eugene Trubetskoy (1863-1920) belongs to the group of Russian thinkers whose work has left an indelible mark on the spiritual life of his homeland and has also served as a bridge for fruitful dialogue between Russia and the West.
As a student of the founder of Russian philosophy, Vladimir Solovyov, Trubetskoy continued his teacher's extensive and substantial work, opening new paths for Russian philosophical thought. Deeply knowledgeable not only in the familiar philosophical tradition but also in the universal one, he remained faithful to his ideas. Through his militant writing and essay studies, he engaged in conversation with the opposite shore, that of Western Europe and its culture.
With his works, whether they are his profound philosophical essays or his texts and interventions on aesthetics, Trubetskoy was one of the pioneers of this fruitful dialogue between the West and Russia, even after his death. Russian emigrants translated his books, which had a great influence on Western European thought during the 20th century.
Trubetskoy successfully analyzed the relationship between the color palette and the content of images. He was the first in Russian literature to present a complete aesthetic, philosophical, theological, and historical interpretation of ancient Russian iconography through these essays.
This edition includes two of the three essays that the thinker wrote about Russian iconography: "Russia Through Its Images" and "The Two Worlds in Russian Iconography."
