Until today, it remains one of the most "dangerous" issues in modern Greek historiography. There are many reasons for the attempted suppression of the tragic events, the repression of the traumatic experience, the concealment of the cost of defeat, and the embellishment of Turkish nationalism. The significant historical Greek presence in the Near East was forgotten, and the universal character of Hellenism was lost in the South of the Balkan Peninsula. Pontus, Ionia, Cappadocia, Eastern Thrace, became points of reference for the survivors and in streets and squares in the new cities of the refugees. For the average citizen, these places were incomprehensible points of reference for some unclassified populations.
