Description
3rd ENRICHED EDITION: March 2022 1st edition: October 2016 This edition presents for the first time the complete proceedings of the two trials of N. Belogiannis and his companions, a large part of the Vavoudis signals, the memoranda for the conversion of the death sentences of Belogiannis, Batsis, and Kaloumenos to life imprisonment, commentary on the conduct of the trials, as well as the historical context in which the trials took place. The content of the historical documents helps the reader to form their own perspective on these specific dramatic events. However, in any case, one cannot bypass critical factors shaping historical developments such as: the role of the USA, the framework within which the leadership of the KKE and particularly N. Zachariadis operated, the ambivalent stance of the Center parties and specifically N. Plastiras, the role of the Throne and the Army. The originality of this study is that in certain cases the archival material leads to iconoclastic conclusions: the Americans only after the outbreak of the Korean War found themselves leading the imposition of the authoritarian post-civil war framework; the actions of the KKE were far from the policy of "armed readiness"; the Plastiras government had very serious responsibilities for the executions; the Palace played a subordinate role compared to that of the USA and the Army. In the trials themselves, on one hand, the heroism of N. Belogiannis and several others who defended their ideals is impressive. On the other hand, the eagerness of many defendants to disassociate themselves from the communist movement encapsulates the terms of defeat in the Civil War for the Greek Left, within the framework of the state terrorism of the time. In the third edition, 77 Vavoudis signals have been added, new information about the biography of Belogiannis and Vavoudis is presented, and many explanatory footnotes are provided both in the body of the Proceedings and in the Signals. The glossary includes an additional 26 short biographies of individuals mentioned in the Signals. At the same time, factual errors that were identified have been corrected, and content observations expressed by both historians and readers of the edition have been taken into account.
